Directory Q & A

Being local is the new hip thing. Celebrity chefs talk about being “locavores,” the Cambridge City Council declared a Local Economy Week, and multinational corporations keep claiming to be “local.” At Cambridge Local First, we’ve been saying that local is cool all along. As the local brand becomes more and more desirable, our annual directory is an even better deal for you. This is the only business directory that verifies that you’re independent and celebrates you for being a locally owned business.

Q: Why should I have my business listed in the CLF Directory?

A: This past year, we’ve distributed 25,000 of these directories in Cambridge—they’re on display in every CLF business, as well as in places like City Hall and Harvard Public Affairs. The Directory is compact enough to fit into a purse or glove compartment, and is the best possible tool for helping Cambridge residents to find your business and buy local!

The Directory is our most powerful marketing tool and Cambridge Local First’s biggest project. A few other quick facts:

  • The CLF Directory has been nationally recognized by other cities and Local First organizations, many of which have modeled their own directories after ours
  • The 2015 Directory will be bigger and better than ever, with a new and improved binding, more listings, and more distribution locations, including Harvard and MIT

Q: What do I need to do in order to have my business listed in the new Directory?

A: Just two easy things: first, you need to be a member in good standing, meaning that all current and past membership dues are paid. If you still owe membership dues (including those from last year), you must pay these in full before the Directory is printed, or your business will not be included. Unfortunately, we cannot make any exceptions to this policy. The second thing you need to do is to make sure that your business listing is correct; this is very important! To do this, simply click on “Member Listings” on the main page of the site, and look up your business listing. If everything is correct and listed in the way you want it, then you don’t need to do anything further. If you need to make changes, contact us and we can help you!

Q: I have more than one location for my business in Cambridge/I’d like to have my business listed in more than one category. Can I do this?

A: Absolutely. Your first listing is included in the annual cost of membership. For multiple locations of the same business, there is a $50 additional fee to list the address and other contact information for each location (listing one additional location would be $50, two would be $100, etc.). If you want to have your business listed in more than one category, there are two ways to do this. For instance, say your store, XYZ of Cambridge, sells both home furnishings and jewelry, and you’d like it listed under both categories. If you want to have a complete listing in both categories, with all your contact information, this costs $75 per additional listing. The cheaper (free!) option, however, is just to have a single-line cross-reference printed in the second category. Your full information would be printed in the Home Furnishings category, and there would be a listing in the Jewelry category saying “XYZ of Cambridge–see listing in Home Furnishings, p. 35“. We’ll be happy to accommodate your preferences, but please let us know by June 1st if you’d like additional listings or cross-references, as this can have a major effect on the final layout of the Directory.

Q: What are my options for advertising?

A: You can take out a 1/4-page, 1/2-page, or full page ad for your business (this is separate from your basic listing, which is included in the price of CLF membership). The prices and sizes of these ads are as follows:

  • 1/4-page ad (2 1/8 x 3 3/4 in.): $200
  • 1/2-page ad (4 1/4 x 3 3/4 in.): $350
  • Full page ad (8 1/2 x 3 3/4 in.): $650

If you submit payment by the “Early Bird” April 1st deadline, you will be eligible for the following discount prices:

  • 1/4-page: $175 ($25 savings)
  • 1/2-page: $275 ($75 savings)
  • Full page: $550 ($100 savings)

We also have full-page ad space available on the inside covers of the Directory, though this premium ad space costs a bit more. Please contact us for details.

Q: What does “camera-ready” mean? In what format should I submit my ad?

A: “Camera-ready” means that no alteration needs to be made to the ad in order to print it: the ad copy is the correct size, in the correct format, and has all the necessary information and graphics in the right places. Ads will be printed in full color, and can include any logos or pictures that you wish to include; the design is completely up to you. We do ask that all ads be submitted in PDF format, and that they be adjusted to the correct size. The resolution should be at least 300 DPI at the final size, and CMYK color format is preferred (though not required). Due to the requirements of our (locally owned and operated!) printer, we cannot accept hard copy of ads—this means no business cards, flyers, printouts, etc. Ads MUST be submitted in digital format, as a PDF file.

Q: But I don’t have an electronic version of my ad, and I don’t have a marketing person or employee to design one—what can I do?

A: Although in past years CLF has been able to do some design/redesign work on members’ advertisements, we regret that we cannot do so this year. Please do not ask us to design or format your ad for you, as we do not have the resources to do so. All ads must be submitted in their final form (camera-ready PDF) by the June 1st deadline. If you want to alter your ad after this deadline (changes to contact information, byline, etc.), we will do our best to help, but please understand that it may not be possible once the proofs have gone to the printer. Changes after the deadline will be at the discretion of the printer and may incur an additional charges.
